October is that time of year. Schools are settling into their routines and have begun to turn some of their attention to host open houses. Open houses are a great chance to see school facilities, meet teachers and administrators, and observe classes in session. I highly recommend visiting a school before you consider sending your child. In my opinion, ideally you would visit during the school day to see teachers in action and get an overall feel for the school, but there are advantages to evening open houses as well–more opportunity to talk to teachers/parents/administrators one on one without interruption.
To help you plan your school visit, Philly School Search has a couple of resources that can help you:
- Our open house calendar lists many area open houses in one place. This calendar is provided on a best effort basis–if your school of interest is not listed, it probably means that I have not heard from them. Contact schools directly for information on their open houses. If your represent a school or a parent organization and your school isn’t listed, tell me about your event.
- I also published a guide for what to ask/do when visiting a school some time back.
