Save yourself from the thoughts of uprooting your family and moving to the suburbs, putting yourself on tons of charter school wait lists, and filling out the financial aid forms every year. Check out your public school! 
Invest in our city's public schools--send your children there--and you will reap public as well as individual/family rewards. 
I liked the idea of my children being exposed to different cultures including non-native English speakers. 
My son is doing fantastic. He is well above his grade level in math and reading, but far from bored and really exploring things and issues I never thought about in kindergarten! 
I was genuinely impressed by the school's desire to pursue cutting edge research in teaching philosophies combined with the traditional values that the school instills in it's students.
